Trakt to Letterboxd and back: how to move your watch history

Moving from Letterboxd to Trakt takes a few minutes. Moving the other way takes a detour, because Letterboxd can't read the file Trakt gives you.

Letterboxd to Trakt: export your data from Letterboxd and upload the zip in Trakt's built-in importer. Trakt to Letterboxd: Trakt's own export is a ZIP of JSON files that Letterboxd can't import, so you run a community converter that writes a Letterboxd CSV and upload that at letterboxd.com/import. Only films move to Letterboxd; it has no TV shows.

From Letterboxd to Trakt

In Letterboxd, go to Settings, then Import & Export, then Export your data. You get a zip with your watched films, ratings, diary and watchlist as CSV files.

In Trakt, open the importer (it is offered when you sign up, and existing members find it in their settings) and choose Letterboxd. Trakt reads the export directly and brings over your history, watchlist and ratings. It skips duplicates, and an import can be undone from your settings.

What does not come along: your custom Letterboxd lists. People on the Trakt forums report that the importer leaves those out.

From Trakt to Letterboxd

Trakt has its own export: in a browser, go to Settings, then Data, and click Export now. You get a ZIP of JSON files with your history, ratings, watchlist and lists.

Letterboxd can't import that. Its importer at letterboxd.com/import takes CSV files in its own format, or an IMDb export. So the usual route is a community converter that reads your Trakt account and writes a Letterboxd CSV, such as Trakt2Letterboxd or Export_Trakt_4_Letterboxd on GitHub. Most of them ask you to register a free Trakt API app first. These are hobby projects, not official tools, so check that the one you pick was updated recently.

Ratings convert neatly: Trakt scores from 1 to 10, Letterboxd uses half stars from 0.5 to 5, so a 7 becomes three and a half stars. TV shows stay behind, because Letterboxd only does films.

And IMDb?

IMDb lets you export your ratings and lists as CSV, and both Letterboxd and Trakt can import that file. The other way round does not work: IMDb has no importer, so moving your Trakt or Letterboxd history into IMDb means rating by hand.

Letterboxd or Trakt: which one to keep

Letterboxd is films only, built around a diary, reviews and lists, and it is where film people talk to each other. Trakt covers films and TV, tracks episodes, and can log what you play automatically through apps like Plex or Kodi. Plenty of people keep both: Trakt for tracking, Letterboxd for writing about films.

Using the same files in What's My Next

If what you actually want is better recommendations, the same exports work here. The Letterboxd zip goes in as it is, the IMDb CSV too. For Trakt, use a converter's CSV with a Trakt ID; Trakt's own JSON export can't be read yet. See importing your watchlist for the steps.

Questions people ask

Can Letterboxd import my Trakt history directly?

No. Letterboxd imports its own CSV format and IMDb exports, not Trakt's JSON export. Use a converter that writes a Letterboxd CSV, then upload it at letterboxd.com/import.

Can Trakt import my Letterboxd history?

Yes. Trakt has a built-in importer that reads the Letterboxd export and brings over your history, watchlist and ratings. Custom lists are left out.

Do my ratings carry over?

Yes, both ways. Trakt's 1 to 10 scale maps onto Letterboxd's half stars, so a 7 becomes three and a half stars.

Can I move TV shows to Letterboxd?

No. Letterboxd only tracks films, so your TV history stays on Trakt.
