Importing what you've already watched from Letterboxd, IMDb or Trakt means a recommendation app doesn't spend weeks re-learning what you already know about your own taste. If you've tracked what you've seen elsewhere, that work shouldn't be wasted.

Letterboxd: go to Settings, then Import & Export, then Export your data. You get a zip file, and you can hand that zip straight to What's My Next without unzipping it first.
IMDb: open your list and choose Export. That produces a single CSV file.
Trakt: there's no official export button built into Trakt itself, so people generally use one of the third-party export tools built for this. Any of them that produces a CSV with a Trakt ID column will work.
The app looks at the file's structure to figure out which service it came from, then matches each entry against its own catalogue by title, year, and a Trakt ID or IMDb ID where the file includes one, which makes the match closer to certain. Ratings come across too: Letterboxd already uses a system close to ours, while IMDb and Trakt use a one-to-ten scale that gets converted automatically.
Anything the app recognizes gets marked as already seen, with your rating attached if you gave one. That's what stops it from recommending you something you watched three years ago and already have an opinion about.
From a Letterboxd export, only your watched and ratings data is used, not your diary entries, reviews, comments or lists, since the diary covers the same films with one entry per rewatch rather than one per film. And because Trakt has no official export, that path depends on whichever third-party tool you use actually including the columns the import needs, so results can vary more than with Letterboxd or IMDb.
