One-star reviews of JustWatch, currently the largest streaming search app, describe adverts appearing over the content they're trying to look at, and a growing amount of the basic experience sitting behind a paywall.
“So many ads popped on top of what I was looking at”1-star App Store review, JustWatch
A free app with a large userbase needs to make money somehow, and advertising plus data partnerships is the standard way to do that without charging anyone directly. It's a reasonable business model. No advertising network is integrated into the app. No data is sold or shared with third-party vendors. Data is stored on servers in Europe, which is a stricter regime than most alternatives operate under. This is free to check yourself in the privacy policy, it isn't a marketing line.
