The best apps to pick what to watch together in 2026, compared honestly

The best app to pick what to watch together depends on one question: do you both want to say yes to something, or do you just need to know where a title is streaming? Those are different jobs, and most lists mix them up.

If you want two people to agree on a title, use a swipe-and-match app: Matched is a dedicated couples app, MatchWatch works in a browser without installing anything, and What's My Next only shows titles on the services you actually pay for. If you only need to know where something is streaming, JustWatch is built for that. Letterboxd is for logging films, not for deciding.

The short comparison

We make What's My Next, so read this with that in mind. We tried to be fair: every other app below does something better than we do.

Matched: a dedicated couples swipe app

Matched works like "Tinder for movies": you both swipe, and a title becomes a match when you both liked it. It has been on the App Store since 2022 and had a 4.7 rating from 283 ratings on the US App Store when we checked. It is free, with in-app purchases.

MatchWatch: no download needed

MatchWatch is built to "match on something everyone wants to watch", in its own words. It runs in a browser as well as on iPhone and Android, which makes it easy to try with someone who does not want another app. It currently covers New Zealand, Australia, the UK and the US.

What's My Next: filtered by the services you pay for

What's My Next works like the swipe apps above, with one difference we built it around: before anything reaches your swipe pile, it checks the title against the streaming services you said you pay for, in your country. You don't match on something you can't play. Each of you swipes on your own phone, the app learns your taste from what you keep and what you skip, and it works in eight languages. It is free, without ads or third-party trackers. It is newer and smaller than Matched.

JustWatch: where is it streaming

JustWatch is not a matching app, and that is fine. It does one job: you already know the title, and you want to know which service has it. It works well next to a matching app.

Letterboxd and TasteRay

Letterboxd is a diary and review community, built around films. You can follow each other and build a shared list, but there is no matching. TV shows are not supported yet; Letterboxd has said TV support is in the works. TasteRay takes a different route: you describe the mood you are in, in plain words, and it suggests up to three titles. It is free during its early access period, with paid plans announced.

How to choose

If you argue about what to watch most evenings, pick a swipe app and let both of you say yes on your own. If you mostly lose time looking for where something streams, JustWatch is enough. And whichever app you use, check that it knows which services you pay for and your country, because a match you cannot play does not help anyone.

How we checked

We make What's My Next, which is one of the apps on this list. Everything we say about the other apps comes from their own store pages, websites or help centres, and only covers things you can verify yourself: what the app does, which platforms it runs on, and what it costs.

Sources, checked on 8 October 2026: Matched on the App Store, matchwatch.tv, justwatch.com, Letterboxd help centre on TV shows, tasteray.com. Apps change quickly, so check each store page before you decide. Spotted something out of date? Mail hello@whatsmynext.app and we'll fix it.

Questions people ask

What is the best app for couples to decide what to watch?

For agreeing on a title together, a swipe-and-match app works best. Matched is a dedicated couples app, MatchWatch needs no install, and What's My Next only shows titles on the streaming services you pay for in your country.

Is there a Tinder for movies?

Yes. Matched, MatchWatch and What's My Next all work that way: both people swipe, and the titles you both liked become your shortlist.

Which app shows where a movie is streaming?

JustWatch is built for exactly that. What's My Next also shows which of your services has a title, and opens it there with one tap.

Are these apps free?

Matched, MatchWatch, JustWatch, Letterboxd and What's My Next all have a free version; Matched has in-app purchases and Letterboxd has paid plans. TasteRay is free during its early access period. Prices change, so check each store page.
